愛玉/愛玉子

[2010.12.06] 在翻譯時出現的一個怪詞 Ok-gue,結果是愛玉,這在亨利氏的台灣植物名錄出現過三次,顯見其重要。

The fruit of this cut in halves and dried is known as ok-gue (ai-yu-tze), 愛玉仔, an article of some importance, as out of it an excellent jelly is made. Specimens of it have been sent by me to Kew and the Pharmaceutical Museum, London.




《台灣通史/卷二七:農業志》

愛玉子:產於嘉義山中。舊志未載其名。道光初,有同安人某居於郡治之媽祖樓街,每往來嘉義,採辦土宜。一日,過後大埔,天熱渴甚,赴溪飲,見水面成凍,掬而飲之,涼沁心脾,自念此間暑,何得有冰?細視水上,樹子錯落,揉之有漿,以為此物化之也。拾而歸家,以水洗之,頃刻成凍,和以糖,風味殊佳,或合以兒茶少許,則色如瑪瑙。某有女曰愛玉,年十五,楚楚可人,長日無事,出凍以賣,飲者甘之,遂呼為愛玉凍。自是傳遍市上,採者日多,配售閩、粵。按愛玉子,即薜荔,性清涼,可解暑。



討論:

1. 連橫的說法只能說不知他由何知道這則故事,是道聽塗說而志之?或有所本?似乎從《台灣通史》裡看不出來(?)。懷疑他的理由很簡單,百多年前,亨利記錄此名,發表於林奈學會刊時,連橫方十八歲(1878-1936),而此Ok-gue之音,流傳至今,南北皆然,百年未曾稍變。反而愛玉之名僅出現在必需書寫之時,才以漢字表之。


2. 依連橫言,道光初,即在1821~1850之前期,在三四十年間,的確是有可能發展為一個產業,而被亨利稱作『有點重要性 (an article of some importance)』。只是,對於其近親薜荔不知二者的產量及製作愛玉凍效果的差異如何?為何今日少人會拿薜荔來做愛玉凍?
